Today in western civ Mr.Schick wasn't here so we answered questions 1, 3, 4, 5 in our blogs for today.

 1. For each term or name, write a sentence explaining its significance:
  • Hellenistic was the culture of people who lived in Alexandria and the time period was 323 BC. It was important because it is the culture that is formed by Alexander the Great's many conquers
  • Alexandria was conquered and named by Alexander the Great, it was founded in 332 BC. It was also home to many important people who had a Hellenistic culture
  • Euclid was a mathematician in Alexandria. He made ideas and proofs on geometry and was alive from 330-260 BC
  • Archimedes was a scientist and mathematician who invented many different things, he found the value in pi and invented the Archimedes screw, he was alive 287-212 BC
  • The Colossus of Rhodes was created by a Hellenistic sculpture, it was the largest Hellenistic statue standing over 100 feet, it was created in 292 BC and was ruined by an earthquake in 225 BC
3. How did trade contribute to cultural diversity in the Hellenistic city of Alexander?

  • The trade was from all countries and was very diverse
4. How did Euclid influence some of the developments in astronomy during Hellenistic period?

  • The geometry that he wrote about helped Ertosthenes and Aristarchus calculate the earth's size
5. What did Stoicism and Epicureanism have in common?

  • They both believe that people should all live in peace

Today in Western Civ we read about Alexander's Empire in the textbook on page 142-145. I learned that Macedonia is located north of Greece and had a rough terrain and a cold climate. I learned that under Aristotle's teachings Alexander learned about science, geography, and literature. To inspire himself he kept the Iliad under his pillow. Once he became king he put his military training into use. When the people of Thesbes rebelled Alexander destroyed the city and 6,000 Thesbes were killed. In 334 BC he lead 35,000 soldiers across Hellespont into Anatolia. Victory gave Alexander control over Anatolia. Alexander's army occupied Babylon, Susa, and Persepolis Alexander then disappeared and no one knew where he was then the city caught on fire and the fire is still unknown today. Alexander was more interested in expanding his empire then controlling it. A little later after this Alexander died at age 32. Then the chapter was over and so was class.

May 15

Today in wester civ we came and in and we learned that the test was curved and we got 4 more points added on to the test. Then we went over the test that we took yesterday. Each person had to answer a question and we talked about some of the questions on the test. I answered question 17 and got it right. I got 10 question right on the test in total. After that we had to start reading the new chapter in the book and take notes on it then we showed him the questions that we answered in class yesterday. When I went to show him the answer I was told I could pick a time to come and redo the test since I didn't get a good grade on it. Then class was over and we left for the day. we ha e this class last tomorrow and we don't have it the next day.

March 5

Today in Western Civ we talked about the wind storm we had on Friday, and for the rest of class we got to work on our projects. We talked about what we were going to do as a group other than the powerpoint and finished up the powerpoint. This is one of our slides that we did today. All athletes competed without any attire. Wrestlers and pankration (a sort of mixed martial art which combined boxing and wrestling) competitors fought covered in oil Corporal punishment awaited those guilty of a false start on the track There were only two rules in the pankration  no biting and no gouging Boxers were urged to avoid attacking the on display male genitals There were no points, no time limits and no weight classifications in the boxing Athletes in the combat sports had to indicate their surrender by raising their index fingers – at times they died before they could do this Boxers who could not be separated could opt for klimax, a system whereby one fighter was gr...
