Today in western civ Mr.Schick wasn't here so we answered questions 1, 3, 4, 5 in our blogs for today.

1. For each term or name, write a sentence explaining its significance:

  • Hellenistic was the culture of people who lived in Alexandria and the time period was 323 BC. It was important because it is the culture that is formed by Alexander the Great's many conquers
  • Alexandria was conquered and named by Alexander the Great, it was founded in 332 BC. It was also home to many important people who had a Hellenistic culture
  • Euclid was a mathematician in Alexandria. He made ideas and proofs on geometry and was alive from 330-260 BC
  • Archimedes was a scientist and mathematician who invented many different things, he found the value in pi and invented the Archimedes screw, he was alive 287-212 BC
  • The Colossus of Rhodes was created by a Hellenistic sculpture, it was the largest Hellenistic statue standing over 100 feet, it was created in 292 BC and was ruined by an earthquake in 225 BC
3. How did trade contribute to cultural diversity in the Hellenistic city of Alexander?

  • The trade was from all countries and was very diverse
4. How did Euclid influence some of the developments in astronomy during Hellenistic period?

  • The geometry that he wrote about helped Ertosthenes and Aristarchus calculate the earth's size
5. What did Stoicism and Epicureanism have in common?

  • They both believe that people should all live in peace
