Today in Western civ we went over the final powerpoint on After Rome. We came in and look at our yearbooks for a little bit then we copied notes down. Then we looks at this church in Turkey and Meet was telling us about it and talking about the ice cream there and we watched a video of it being made. We also found out we have a test on Monday when we come back.

  • Germanic Barbarians:
  • Barbarians warlords and their families who assembled into Roman culture became the nobles or aristocrats of medieval Europe
  • German tribes who ruled former Roman lands sought to conquer and assemble other barbarian people who lived beyond the frontier and were still pagans
  • Angles and saxons from Denmark and northwestern Germany invaded Britain and assimilated the native Britain 
  • Most anglo-saxons were converted to christianity in the 7th century
  • Most powerful Germanic tribe was franks
  • Real power lay with the mayors of the palace who were royal officials and nobles themselves
  • Eastern Roman Empire continued while the west is getting divided up by the barbarians tribes
  • Emperor Justinian came to power in 527 decided to reunite the entire Roman Empire by reconquering the western territories 
  • Justinian succeded for a time but the land he retook was soon conquered by new barbarian tribes and a massive plague depopulated much of the west
  • Greek Byzantine emperors saw themselves as Roman Emperors and the heads of the Christian Church
  • Byzantine preserved Greco-roman art architectures, philosophy and writing despite much of it being non-christians
  • Justinian built the massive domed Hagia Sophia in Constantinople considered to be the more glorious church on Earth at all time
  • 3rd version finished in the 537 the cathedral of Hagi Sophia, Justinian's cathedral was a later a mosque is now a museum. Using knowledge of geometry curves it has a dome supposed by arches high in the air that remained a model fro both church- builders and mosque builders for more than 1,000 years
